🌱In the spirit of Earth Day, I thought it would be nice to share all the ways I try to keep things low waste and eco-friendly. - We repurpose as much packing material as possible including some extras we get from @acupuncturejo.lkn so most shipped orders come in repurpose boxes/bubblewrap, etc. - Any order that we don’t have the right size box for, we ship in @ecoenclose packaging which is made of recycled material and can be reused. - We try to pack all of our products in glass jars. We are working to step away from all plastic packaging but do encourage our customers to return our plastic jars so that we can clean them and reuse them. They also get a 5% discount for this. - We partner with local zero waste businesses to offer bulk sizes of our Natural Deodorant. This way customers can refill their own jars and pay by the ounce. Zero waste Natural Deo is available at @rooted_rethinkery and @goodearthessentialsclt - items we can’t re-purpose get recycled with the help of the @terracycle box at @acupuncturejo.lkn 🌱 Our goal is to package all of our items, including the trial sized items, in glass containers. We will also be making the move to soy based inks in the near future. One of our biggest goals is to source all of our essential oils locally, which would be a huge step as it will reduce a lot of the carbon emission and transportation from getting these oils shipped to us. Women’s Health Wednesday: ❣️Did you ever picture what your ideal labor and delivery would be? Did it involve being strapped to a bed, put under general anesthesia (for a vaginal delivery) and having your partner wait outside the entire time? Well that’s what happened to births once the medical system began promoting in hospital births. . ❣️You see before that, women birthed at home, either with a midwife or by themselves. They had their partners and loved ones of their choosing present. They didn’t have to stop eating or drinking. They were not strapped to a bed or to an IV (because they could hydrate themselves). They did it mostly on their own...why? Because the female reproductive system was built for it. . ❣️Yes, emergencies occurred. Some lives were lost. One would think that the rate of mortality surely diminished when births started happening in the hospital. Well, they didn’t. They actually increased. . ❣️What about Breech babies? Midwives were (and some still are) trained in delivering Breech babies. They are also trained in attempting to flip Breech and Transverse babies via different external maneuvers and exercises. Obstetricians, however, are not usually trained in Breech delivery. Some of them only witnessed a few vaginal deliveries before going into practice. This is because they are trained to operate; not deliver. . ❣️OBs can be absolute life savers and their importance should not be undermined. However, it has become the norm for pregnant women to receive care, from the moment they know they have conceived, from the doctor who is supposed to be the last resort. . ❣️How can you make an educated choice about your birth when no one presents all the options to you? If you are pregnant, or would like to be at some point, consider meeting with a midwife or a doula. They can educate you on all the options and give you educated and accurate advise. ❣️Women’s Health Wednesday: Low Libido: I remember when I couldn’t watch TV without a commercial for Viagra or Cialis popping up. Recently, I saw a commercial for a drug for female reduced sex drive and thought this would be a good topic to break down. . ❣️A lot of the culture assumes that women/females/uterine carriers don’t have the same sex drive or aren’t as interested in sex, as men. I know some ladies that would beg to differ! The reality is, there are a lot of factors that can affect sex drive. Physically, if there is any kind of pain during sexual activity, this may cause the sufferer’s interest to dwindle. There could also be some hormonal influence as well. For example, some notice a big peak in desire around ovulation/menstruation while for others, it completely plummets. Same goes for menopause. . ❣️There is also a huge psychological/emotional component. Someone who is struggling with depression, or taking anti-depressants (for example) can have a reduced sex drive. Other times, it really comes down to the connection with your partner. Maybe, you can’t fathom having sex with them (because you might be over their bull 💩) but you have no problem fantasizing or having sexual desires for someone else. . ❣️So what can you do about it? Even though there is a medication currently available for female low libido, it is important to get down to the cause. If there are recurrent yeast infections, BV issues, vulvar/vaginal dryness or pain, or other problem that makes sex less comfortable, and therefore less appealing, those issues should be addressed. . ❣️If it is due to a medication, you could ask your doctor about switching to a different medicine. If you feel anxious, depressed or overwhelmed processing emotions right now, seeing a therapist can be amazingly helpful. As a reminder, consider alternatives such as Acupuncture, Vaginal Steaming, Pelvic Floor Therapy, Functional or Naturopathic Medicine that can all help to improve the actual cause of the reduced sex drive. . ❣️In Chinese medicine too much, as well as not enough libido,can indicate imbalances in your Kidney energy (among other areas) and can be improved with Acupuncture and/or Herbal Medicine.

✨It’s been a long week trying to get this little space @acupuncturejo.lkn ready but tons of progress has been made. It has all the essentials to provide a treatment but it is not 100% complete yet. 🍓We love preparing these delicious oatmeal jars for a quick lunch or easy snack on days when we can’t take time away to prepare a full meal. . . 🍓We used organic steel cuts oats, bananas, strawberries, cinnamon and maple syrup. We like to add a little oat milk, as well as granola for some crunch, and then fill the rest with water. Usually we let it sit overnight in the fridge (or for a couple of days) and heat it when we are ready to eat OR place the jars in a slow cooker with enough water to come up about 2/3 the height of the jars. Then we set it on low and leave it to cook overnight. . 🍓Tip: take these out of the slow cooker as soon as you get up in the morning to allow them to cool enough to eat by the time you are ready for breakfast (tongs are highly suggested). . 🍓Who else loves overnight oats? ❣️Women’s Health Wednesday: Varicose Veins. . ❣️Do you have, or have you ever seen, thick, bulging, dark blue/green/purple veins? Does the area around them ever get itchy, achy or painful? If so, those might be varicose veins. . ❣️Women/Uterine carriers are at higher risk for developing this type of vein due to hormonal changes affecting circulation. They can also develop more in people who are overweight or spend long periods of time standing or sitting. . ❣️These veins have difficulty pumping blood back to the heart causing the blood to slightly pool in the vein and this produces the bulging effect. Common treatments involve injecting the vein with foam (which basically seals it off), cauterizing the vein (burning it) or stripping the vein (removing it all together). . ❣️While these treatments may seem like common sense, Chinese Medicine views this issue differently. Varicose Veins are viewed as Blood Stagnation (blood not moving as it should throughout the body). If you are already having trouble circulating blood adequately, removing a vein isn’t going to solve the issue. The problem will likely persist and go on to affect another vein. . ❣️So how does one treat these? From a Chinese Medicine stand point, blood letting therapy can be quite useful is getting that vein to release some of the stagnant blood that causes discomfort. It can even reduce some of the bulging. Herbal therapy can be really useful in promoting blood circulation (much different than blood thinning) which also helps relieve some pain and can help the appearance. . ❣️It is still a good idea to address the underlying issue, even if you decide to move forward with a medical procedure to get rid of the vein, to prevent another vein from becoming varicose. . ❣️Do you have any of the veins? 💄Women’s/Uterine Carrier’s Health Wednesday: Makeup! . 💄Funny to be talking about this when most people are likely only applying makeup to feel some kind of normalcy these days. Either way, as we have mentioned before, the skin is your largest organ and it absorbs a LOT of what we put on it; so you want to make sure your makeup (especially if you use it daily) is as non-toxic as possible. . 💄I bet you are wondering “how toxic can makeup be”? The short answer: very! Conventional makeup uses a lot of preservatives to remain shelf stable. These include parabens which have been linked to cancer and endocrine disruption. Others can contain phthalates which are also endocrine disrupters. A lot of the pigments and fragrance added to makeup is synthetically derived and also filled with the same nasties. . 💄To make things worse, companies who are not cruelty free also add animal ingredients such as Carmine (cochineal beetle), Stearic Acid (from the fat of several animals) and Shellac (resin secreted by lac insect). Not to mention they also TEST their products on animals. . 💄Considering you swallow a certain amount of your lipstick/lip gloss/lip balm, wouldn’t you want the ingredients in it to be safe for you and the environment? Even if you only use “a little makeup”, think of how it accumulates over the years. . 💄Speaking of years, makeup that sits for too long can develop mold and bacteria which then gets transferred on to the skin and even your eyes (hello old ass tube of mascara)! . 💄Be kind to your body and reduce your exposure to these toxins by switching to clean beauty products. 💧Women’s Health Wednesday: Water Filtration. . 💧Many of us have filters on our sink faucets or refrigerators to filter the water we drink; but what about the water we shower in? . 💧Your skin is your largest organ and also very absorbing. If you don’t want to drink all the nasties in regular tap water, why would you stand or bathe in it daily? Especially hair washing days where you could be exposed for quite a while. . 💧Luckily, they sell shower filters which attach right to your water spigot and then to your shower head. These filters work really well at filtering chlorine, metals and minerals that can be very harsh on our skin, hair and hormones. . 💧Personally, I know my filter is working because my skin gets less dry and my eyes won’t sting when the shower water falls into them. Also, the smell of chlorine is completely gone when the filter is fresh. When it is time to change the filter, I can smell the chlorine and my eyes get super irritated. . 💧If you color treat your hair (ideally with something natural) this is easily the most effective way to preserve the color. If you have skin conditions like Psoriasis or Eczema, this can also be super helpful. Even just for reducing exposure to chlorine and other water treatment chemicals, these filters are worth trying. . 💧I get mine at Lowe’s or Home Depot. They last about 3-6 months and cost about $20. What if I told you that your underwear can be responsible (in some capacity) for your recurring yeast infections or BV episodes? . ❣️Head to your underwear drawer and pull out your favorite pair. Check the label...what is it made of? If the entire crotch area is not made of a breathable fabric such as cotton, viscose, tencel or modal, you might be suffocating your vulva. . ❣️Fabrics like polyester and nylon, don’t do the best job at wicking away moisture and allowing proper air flow. Not only does this promote more odor but it also creates an environment where bad bacteria can proliferate (which is what causes the odor) and trigger a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis episode. If the lining of the crotch is cotton but the outside is polyester, some airflow is still going to be restricted so choose wisely. . ❣️For my thong and g-string wearing ladies...make sure you are wearing the right size. Movement of the fabric can transfer bacteria from your anus to your vulva. ❣️Women’s Health Wednesday: Mid cycle spotting/ovulation bleeding. . ❣️Being a woman/having a uterus is truly amazing. Not only can we bleed for several days without dying but, sometimes, some of us will also bleed on days outside of our periods. For someone, this bleeding coincides with ovulation and is quite normal for them. Ovulation spotting/bleeding can be bright red/pink to dark brown and can be spotting or enough to saturate a pad. . ❣️Some women bleed at random times in their cycles that are not related to periods or ovulation. In many cases, bleeding can be due to Ovarian Cysts, Uterine Fibroids or Polyps. In fewer cases it can happen due to Endometriosis or Adenomyosis (assuming of course that the bleeding was not caused by sex). Different methods of birth control can also cause mid cycle spotting/bleeding. . ❣️If you have always had spotting/bleeding with ovulation, or if you had the bleeding/spotting once and never again, this is not as concerning for most people. Now, if you have started to develop this bleeding on a more frequent basis, no matter what color or what amount, it is a good idea to have a pelvic or trans-vaginal ultrasound. . ❣️This will help determine the cause of bleeding so that it can be addressed. Most Western Medicine practitioners will offer some kind of hormonal treatment (birth control) or surgery (to remove a polyp/cyst/fibroid). . ❣️Alternative Medicine practitioners will likely offer more natural and less invasive treatments such as Pelvic Hydrotherapy/Vaginal Steams, Acupuncture, Abdominal Massage, Herbal Therapy, etc, all of which can be very helpful. ☕️How we make zero waste cold brew coffee in our house. . ☕️We leave 5 Tbsp of @blackriflecoffee and 32oz of cold filtered water in the fridge overnight. We cover our press with a cute vintage linen cover by @creatingasmallchange . ☕️In the morning, we remove the cover and wrap a @coffeesock basket filter around the meshes of the press. . ☕️Then, we press the grounds slowly and pour the filtered coffee into a mason jar. This coffee will keep for up to 2 weeks in the fridge since no acid is being released during the cold brewing process. . ☕️All you have to do is dress up your coffee however you like, drink it straight or...if you are like us, warm it up for a wanderlust coffee with @consciouscoconut oil and @vitalfarms butter...Yum! . ☕️Simply compost the used grounds or just throw them in your garden, wash your filter and press and you are good to go. Women’s Health Wednesday: Pain After Intercourse. . ❣️Have you ever experienced intense discomfort or pain during, or even after, intercourse? We’re not talking about muscle soreness from being in awkward positions or working things out that haven’t been used in a while. We are talking about pain or soreness in the lower abdomen, pelvis, vagina or rectum that can linger. . ❣️Do you experience bleeding shortly after intercourse in addition to discomfort? While soreness is quite common and can persist for a short time after intercourse; having actual pain or bleeding is not normal and is a signal to get some answers. . ❣️Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue that belongs inside the uterus migrates and grows out of the uterus. These tissues can attach just about anywhere in the abdomen (to the ovaries,bladder, intestines, colon, etc). Since it is tissue that responds to hormonal changes, these tissues can bleed during your menstruation and cause a lot of discomfort and heavier bleeding. . ❣️Since these tissues are in places they shouldn’t be, they can get really irritated during and after sexual activity. It is important to distinguish soreness from other causes such as not enough lubrication, using a toy or having a partner that is uncomfortably large, rough intercourse, etc. If you notice pain/discomfort/bleeding after each session (even the not so exciting ones), you should consult with a health care professional. . ❣️Endometriosis can be confirmed via Laparoscopy but new tests such as @receptivadx can also help diagnose without surgery. ❣️Women’s Health Wednesday: Period Sex. . ❣️For some women, this time of the month is definitely off limits for intercourse. For others, it’s when they desire it most. So what gives? Should you or shouldn’t you? . ❣️There are some myths revolving around period sex. One of the most common is that you can’t get pregnant if you have unprotected sex during a period. This is false! Ovulation can happen at any time, especially for women who have irregular periods or women who bleed for a longer period of time. . ❣️One of the other myths is that period blood is unhealthy/dirty. Period blood is no different than regular blood except that it contains uterine lining. . ❣️From a Chinese Medicine perspective, sex should be avoided during active menstrual bleeding because it can impede the flow from exiting the body smoothly. This, in turn, can create clots or cause cramping in the long run. Is it likely to cause any issues if you have period sex sporadically? No, as long as you don’t engage in intercourse every period, or for consecutive days, it should be infrequent enough to not cause any issues. . ❣️It should be noted that this also applies to any kind of penetrative sex during your period (i.e. self love with your fingers, the aid of a sex toy, etc). It also applies to using tampons to allow for less messy oral sex (or even in general). Though menstrual soft cups are a little less obtrusive, and they are designed to be worn during sex, if there is going to be any kind of vaginal penetration, it still obstructs blood flow from exiting smoothly. . ❣️Bottom line: if you and your partner/s are comfortable with it...Do it! Throw down a towel to prevent staining the surface with blood and go for it. ❣️Women’s Health Wednesday: Yeast Infections. If you have a vagina, it’s likely you’ve had one of these at least once in your life. . ❣️ Yeast infections can occur when there is an overgrowth of unhealthy fungus (candida) in our system. The most common symptoms are itching, burning, and thick discharge from the vagina. . ❣️Traditional treatments involve getting on some kind of medication, typically antifungals, which are supposed to help kill the candida. However, when applied locally, it is only effective for the area that it is coming into contact with. This means that if you have candida in different parts of your body (say your digestive system) it will not keep it from creating a problem in the vagina as time passes. You can take the oral anti-fungal but it can cause horrible side effects. Plus, it does nothing to address prevention of another yeast infection. . ❣️Under incorrect assumptions, some women resort to washing themselves incessantly because they feel the infection is “dirty”. ❣️Do you see clots when you have your period? You know, those globs that come out when you shower, or onto your pad or the ones that cling to a tampon? What size are yours? Smaller than a dime? Larger than a quarter? Has a health care provider ever asked you about your menstrual clots? Have you ever asked them? . ❣️Chances are, if the topic has ever come up, you were told that clotting is normal and no one really distinguishes between small clots and really large ones. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) all clotting is considered abnormal.....say whaaaaaat?! . ❣️Clotting is a sign that your menstrual flow has not been exiting your system smoothly, therefore it accumulates into a more clotted substance over time. Usually, menstruating people who pass large clots tend to have cramping associated with it as the body has to work harder to push it out. . ❣️We can also notice clotting when we pass cysts, fibroids or polyps (these tend to look more tissuey or mucous-y). So what is normal? . ❣️Healthy menstrual flow is bright red with no clotting. Though it is normal to see pieces of tissue, clumps of blood indicate that your body is having a hard time letting go of the lining. . ❣️So what can you do about it? That all depends on what it is about you that creates these clots in the first place. I like to do thorough consultations with my patients to identify all of the different factors and make recommendations based on the individual. . ❣️Want to know what applies to everyone across the board??? Avoid using tampons! I know, I know...you don’t want to “sit in it” all day or you “bleed through a tampon and pad” or you “are very active” and don’t want pads chaffing you. Using a menstrual cup is a much better alternative. Rather than an irritating wad of fiber that is absorbing menstrual blood and other natural secretions that shouldn’t be absorbed, cups just sit and collect the flow as it exits your cervix.
